When I took this photo, it was because I had enjoyed the thought of rarity. A hawk landing on top of the cross in the bustling streets of Manhattan, seemed a bit out of the ordinary and I’m no religious man, but it still struck me as a powerful image. Yet most people didn’t notice it, it was just me, and one other seemingly homeless woman. So I went up to her and started conversation:

“What do you think the hawk landing on the cross means?” I said. So she turned to me, after a solid session of babbling to herself, and cracked: “You tell me first.”

“Well the hawk, to me, means freedom, as a bird of prey there really isn’t anything that arguably threatens the hawk. The cross however, means binding, means pain, means the removal of freedom, typically associated with death and suffering for sin. See how the hawk doesn’t move a bit while up there?”

She sighed, and with a smile looked into my eyes deeper than madness would have allowed, crafting “No, the hawk and the cross are both freedom. The hawk sits on top of that roost because he can watch over all of this park. Jesus died for our sins and freed us all, and so both the hawk and the cross have an appreciation of that.” and with that, turned from me and disappeared shortly down the street.

Now, again, I’m no religious man and this story is true, for I have lived it. But what I wanted to point out is the way all of us can have vastly different interpretations of the same event. Religion teaches the “right” interpretation, and guides the eye in order to understand challenges and lessons humanity faces. Culture does the same thing, if the hawk had instead been resting upon a symbol of Scientology, that story would have been vastly different based on each person’s beliefs on Scientology.

These fundamental beliefs are what structure our world, and allow us to view what we each find appealing. Let us not forget however, these very same beliefs hide certain parts of our world from view, keeping them in the dark. We love our beliefs and so we fight for them and defend them to the death.

You know your in love with someone and something when it gives you the ability to turn the smallest of events, into the greatest of messages.
